PROVO, Utah –

BYU women’s basketball earned its first win in conference play of the 2024-25 season with an 89-75 victory over Houston Wednesday night at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.

Senior Emma Calvert recorded a season-high 21 points shooting 9-of-11 from the field, grabbing seven rebounds, and recording three assists.

Amari Whiting was right behind Calvert adding 20 points on 50% shooting while working a triple-double with adding seven rebounds and five assists.

Delaney Gibb and Brinley Cannon would also finish in double figures with 16 and 10 respectively.

The 89-point win is a season high for the Cougars who snapped a three-losing streak following a tough road trip.

Kierra Marchant, Gia Cooke,  Laila Blair, and Peyton McFarland would all finish in double figures for Houston.

Marchant led the Cougars in scoring by pouring in 23 points with a very efficient shooting night going 9-of-12 from the field, and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. She led Houston on a late 8-0 run in the third quarter that cut BYU’s lead to three.

Cutting Down Turnovers

Amber Whiting’s team cut down on the turnovers on Wednesday night after turning it over 31 times against West Virginia, which would be the second-most turnovers in a game since 2002. Those turnovers last Saturday, Jan. 4th  led to 33 of the Mountaineers’ 66 points that night.

BYU only turned the ball over 13 times which led to 19 points for Houston but it wouldn’t matter as they answered with 16 points of their own.

Sharing the Basketball

BYU made 33 shots on 23 assists. “When we have multiple players in double figures we are tough”, said BYU coach Amber Whiting.

The women’s team is 7-2 with at least three players in double figures and is undefeated when four players score 10 or more.

The Cougars now turn their attention to No. 12 Kansas State Wildcats who will enter the Marriott Center Saturday, Jan. 12th. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 pm MT. The game will broadcast live on ESPN+ with Spencer Linton and Kristen Kozlowski on the call.
