BYU kicked off the 2018 season in style with a huge opening night win on the road against the Arizona Wildcats, 28-23. Since that game ended late Saturday night, early Sunday morning, ESPN 960 host of Cougar Sports, Ben Criddle has been an insomniac pouring over the film from the Cougars big win in what he calls, Ben Criddle’s Film.
Here are all the tweets from Criddle’s Film Review.

First things first…
Tanner Mangum has gone from the cliche label “Elite 11 Co-MVP”
“Under Armor All-American MVP” to….“Journeyman Quarterback”
He looked like he was finally tapping into the old cliche in the 2nd half of last night #TylerMagnum #BCF#BYU pic.twitter.com/Ok0134i7AQ
— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 2, 2018
Here’s a reminder of what that “Co-MVP Elite 11 QB” looked like years ago.
Much has been said re: his mechanics & or a change in his mechanics.
The upper body mechanics look familiar to me, there may be some change in the modern day lower body mechanics though. #BYU#BCF pic.twitter.com/iWBMHgBJGq

One of my favorite things to see game #1 is who the coaching staff has decided to put on the "Kick Off Cover"
These are the guys on the football team that I deem as "Football Players"
They're big, they're strong, they're fast, they're physical and enjoy tackling. #BCF#BYU
— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 2, 2018
Your game 1 "Kick Off Cover" team is:
From left to right:
Dayan Ghanwoloku
Micah Simon
Austin Kafentzis
Brayden El-Bakri
K: Andrew Mikkelson
Jared Kapisi
Riggs Powell
Sawyer Powell
Zayne Anderson
Matt Hadley
Michael Shelton#BCF#BYU— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 2, 2018
Not many teams are going to return kicks vs. BYUthis year IMO.
BYU was 22nd in the country last year in KOC avg 18.47 YPR.
I like this years team.
Thus far it looks like rather than “pooching” the ball w/in the 5 yd line they will try to kick it into/out endzone. #BCF#BYU
— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 2, 2018
First kick off of the game UofA tried their luck with a sideline return attempt.
Micah Simon forces the returner inside and almost makes the tackle, but I’d rather see him make contact w/ the upback and squeeze that seam whole maintaining outside leverage.#BCF#BYU pic.twitter.com/v1FMI5ieog
— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 2, 2018
Here’s a slow mo view of same KOR.
Kafentzis does a nice job of initiating contact, exploding through the blocker, extending his arms while keeping his outside leverage. He’s able to beat the block & make the tackle (#24) Riggs Powell (#44) cleans up doing same thing#BCF#BYU pic.twitter.com/VORBhDNvGK

BYU’s defensive front was “multiple” all game, showing not only versatility & competency of their personnel, but also their coaches
This is a 30 front. 3 down lineman w/ NG head up over center. 6-9 280 LB DE is in a standing 7 tech waiting for quick passes to the wide side#BCF pic.twitter.com/sOUIsPh151
— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 2, 2018
This is of note because many of us have labeled BYU’s defense as a 4-3 defense. The last two years I’ve seen Ilaisa change his fronts according to his personnel and also the offensive scheme he is preparing for. https://t.co/iLeWniPItI

I’m hearing a lot of criticism being heaped on Sumlin for wanting to make Tate into a QB/ATH & not fostering the ATH/QB of last year.
Tate wants to become an NFL QB, he has a cannon & is an accurate passer IMO. Here’s commentary from the crew regarding the subject. #BCF#BYU pic.twitter.com/KhjkgoaUd4

2&7/BYU decides to bring a 5 man pressure out of their 3-4 look.

1st offensive group Grimes chooses to go with in 2018:

AZ brings an initial 5 man pressure w/ a twist (NG & RDE). There’s a delayed “Add” blitz w/ weak side ILB. This allows Squally to slip out to flat for a reception & big gain. Nice block by Pau’u! #BCF #BYU pic.twitter.com/MTM8eCywQw

This is a really nice touch pass from Tanner hitting his RB in stride. He was patient despite the pocket collapsing. One of the only gripes BYU fans had regarding Taysom was his inability to put touch on the ball in the screen/check down game.. #BCF #BYU https://t.co/u7W8jZLmp0

Here’s another angle of the reverse pivot roll out. Nice initial stem by Micah. Gets up field w/ out deviation. Micah executes a nice reverse comeback and creates enough separation for the ball to be completed to the outside. #BCF #BYU pic.twitter.com/4NKnGh1obZ
— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 3, 2018
Much has been made of the story line that Sumlin forced Tate to stay in the pocket & throw
I think BYU’s D deserves more credit. They were extremely disciplined & gap sound. They strung out everything outside towards the sideline. Rarely did Tate have vertical creases #BCF #BYU pic.twitter.com/AO2ApkPSi4

BYU in their 30 frontPlay action pass w/ a drive wheel route concept. TE is being targeted on the weak side. TE vs.Takitaki.

Another angle of the PBU and coverage of Sione Takitaki.
Great timing and instincts by ST in recognizing the incoming pass & using his left hand to rake the pocket@D_Nixon knows how difficult it is to guard the wheel route from the weakisde OLB spot. What you think? #BCF #BYU pic.twitter.com/OnsQ2ivTDr
— Benjamin Criddle (@CriddleBenjamin) September 3, 2018
It is impossible to block Sione Takitaki in space. This is the reason why the coaches moved him off the LOS.
3 consecutive plays were made on this drive by Sione Takitaki.
You’d figure the OC would stop attacking arguably the best defensive player on BYU’s squad. #BCF #BYU pic.twitter.com/5oEJK0SQoi

This is Tate’s 3rd vertical shot down field in essentially 1 quarter of play. I don’t know if that is Tate’s decision or Mazzone/Sumlin’s but that’s a lot of shots.

Watch Michael Shelton up top. His transition to top end speed is superb, his punch to be shoulder pad gives him just a bit of a cushion to stay on the hip & slow down the WR. Most of them netted a positive gain #BYU #BCF

Watch route from Pau’u
This is a out route w/ a small deviation. I call it an inside out. As you break down bring your outside foot forward & punch w/ outside hand to create separation. You turn inside & pivot off the original outside foot. Hard to guard as a DB #BCF #BYU pic.twitter.com/ifnLtos27x

AZ’s defensive front is improved from last year IMO. They ranked 84th in the country in rush defense last year 184 YPG. BYU gained 184 yards rushing.

Plenty of zone reads/RPO’s called for Tate to work his magic from 2017.

Really weird thing happens here
There were 34 seconds on the clock
